Google announced last week they will discontinue Wave by the end of the year. As it was for the Wave ecosystem and even its users, that was quite a shock for me. But after some thinking we can “almost” understand why it failed. Here are 6 main reasons why.

Websites or software can be classified as HCIs, “Human Computer Interactions”. By definition those “interactions” are cold and impersonal ; you do talk to a computer and therefore don’t expect anything else. And usually that’s a good thing, those UIs should be straightfoward and do their job.

While this can be a rule of thumb when designing UIs,  I really think that software could act more as a human and should trigger some emotions, like: “Woooh, that’s magic!” or – and that is even easier – a smile on your users’face.

Everybody know how to “printscreen”.  Lots of people also know some small soft or plugin which helps creating a screen capture. But those are usually so time consuming!

For instance, when I had to send some comments to my designers, I had to make a “print screen” of the web page, paste it into illustrator or Photoshop and comment the image… All that was repetitive and so annoying.

Now with Jing I only need a few seconds to send a screen capture with comments to a friend!

An interesting discussion this weekend led me to think about Google Buzz. It seems that around me people remain very negative about it. Among critics we can find its complexity, its disturbing GMail integration, or just a “Pff-yet-another-twitter” kind of reaction. Third party website integrations

In the “Did you notice that?” series, I discovered this morning an interesting Google Search feature. When searching for instance “Paris – Nouméa”, you find this nice integration of third-party travel websites directly in your results. Don’t know when they rolled out this feature, but for sure I am a fan. This saves some very valuable clicks!

Here are some other niceties from Google Search:

email notifications for Google Wave

Finally, they are here!

We’ll come back on Google wave longer in a future post but we couldn’t stay quiet face to this news! One of our main deceptions with Google wave was the lack of integration with mail.

Ok the integration is not complete (we can’t answer to a mail to publish something on a wave for example), but we have notifications! Maybe I’ll use it a little more (not so hard, I have used it during 3 days… then never…). Moreover to fight information overflow we spoke about in the last post, there is an aggregation support.

More thoughts about google wave in a future post…

A web 2.0 heritage

As always the Enterprise market follows the Consumer market and Web 2.0 problems are starting to emerge in the Enterprise too. One of them is this whole notion of Information Overload. People are more and more annoyed with all those sources they subscribe to.
