First Digital Startup Trophey (le Trophée Startup Numérique) organized by Telecom SudParis. There were more than 80 french startups in this competition and there was some truly interesting projects.
We are very grateful to Telecom SudParis for organizing such an attractive – and unique – competition. Part of the price included a free incubation in their Parisian center, as well as coaching from their best advisors.

This week Foursquare rolled out his 2.0 version, an event that got a lot of media coverage. Some very interesting features in there including a small button that let you add the “venue” you are viewing in your Foursquare to-do list. Does it remind you something? Yep, Facebook announced their own “Like” button, some months ago at their F8 conference.

And that time again that’s a hit! How do they do that? For such a small button??

Google announced last week they will discontinue Wave by the end of the year. As it was for the Wave ecosystem and even its users, that was quite a shock for me. But after some thinking we can “almost” understand why it failed. Here are 6 main reasons why.

Websites or software can be classified as HCIs, “Human Computer Interactions”. By definition those “interactions” are cold and impersonal ; you do talk to a computer and therefore don’t expect anything else. And usually that’s a good thing, those UIs should be straightfoward and do their job.

While this can be a rule of thumb when designing UIs,  I really think that software could act more as a human and should trigger some emotions, like: “Woooh, that’s magic!” or – and that is even easier – a smile on your users’face.

An interesting discussion this weekend led me to think about Google Buzz. It seems that around me people remain very negative about it. Among critics we can find its complexity, its disturbing GMail integration, or just a “Pff-yet-another-twitter” kind of reaction. But still, having thought about it for a while, I do think that Google Buzz is awesome: its UI, its integration with other Google services, its feature set – Google Buzz feels a bit like a Twitter 2.0 for me… So what is the problem?

In the “Did you notice that?” series, I discovered this morning an interesting Google Search feature. When searching for instance “Paris – Nouméa”, you find this nice integration of third-party travel websites directly in your results. Don’t know when they rolled out this feature, but for sure I am a fan. This saves some very valuable clicks!
